Using GeForce Now And Chromebooks to Run An Esports Team

At Garden State Esports, we are always looking for ways to make scholastic esports more accessible. One of the biggest barriers for schools is equipment. Many districts have thousands of Chromebooks but few computers capable of running competitive games such as Rocket League.

Several years ago, Regina Schaffer, a Garden State Esports team member and coach of the Middletown Lions, was approached by one of her students, Gary. He had been experimenting with Rocket League on his Chromebook through NVIDIA GeForce NOW.

At the time, we did not know that was possible.

Gary walked us through the process, and his discovery helped us explore whether cloud gaming could give more schools an affordable way to begin competing. GeForce NOW and its membership options have changed since then, but the central idea remains relevant:

A school can technically play Rocket League on Chromebooks through GeForce NOW, provided it has the right network, accounts, equipment, and support from its IT department.

However, schools should understand the limitations before relying on cloud gaming for official competitions.

What Is GeForce NOW?

GeForce NOW is NVIDIA’s cloud gaming service. Instead of running a game directly on the Chromebook, the game runs on a remote gaming computer operated by NVIDIA. The Chromebook displays the video stream while sending the player’s controller inputs back to the remote computer.

This means the Chromebook does not need the processing power or graphics card normally required to run Rocket League.

NVIDIA currently supports GeForce NOW on Chromebooks with at least 4 GB of RAM and Chrome 77 or newer. Rocket League remains available through the Epic Games Store version of the game. New players should select the Epic Games version because Rocket League is no longer available for new users through Steam.

What Each Player Needs

Each student will generally need:

  • A supported Chromebook

  • A compatible controller

  • An individual NVIDIA account

  • An individual Epic Games account

  • Rocket League added to the student’s Epic Games library

  • Access to an appropriate GeForce NOW membership

  • Parent or guardian consent when required

  • Permission to access the service on the school network

Xbox and PlayStation controllers are officially supported on ChromeOS. Other controllers may also work, but schools should test their exact equipment before purchasing controllers for an entire team.

Students should use their own authorized accounts. Schools should not share one NVIDIA or Epic Games login across an entire team.

NVIDIA’s current terms describe GeForce NOW access as personal, noncommercial, and nontransferable. The terms also state that minors must receive consent from a parent or legal guardian. A district considering GeForce NOW should review those terms and confirm that its planned account structure is appropriate before purchasing memberships.

The Network Is More Important Than the Chromebook

The most important part of a cloud gaming setup is not the device. It is the school network.

NVIDIA currently recommends at least:

  • 15 Mbps per device for 720p at 60 frames per second

  • 25 Mbps per device for 1080p at 60 frames per second

  • Less than 80 milliseconds of latency between the school and an NVIDIA data center

  • A wired Ethernet connection or a strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection

A three-player Rocket League team streaming at 1080p could therefore require at least 75 Mbps of available bandwidth just for the three game streams. That estimate does not include other students, staff, security systems, video conferencing, or other traffic using the network at the same time.

Internet speed alone is not enough. Packet loss, network congestion, filtering, and Wi-Fi interference can cause delayed controls, blurry video, freezing, or disconnections. These issues matter much more in a competitive game than they do when watching a video.

For the best results, schools should:

  1. Use Ethernet whenever possible.

  2. Test all player devices at the same time.

  3. Conduct testing during the same after-school hours when matches will occur.

  4. Run full-length scrimmages, not just five-minute demonstrations.

  5. Test voice communication alongside gameplay.

  6. Avoid relying on a guest Wi-Fi network.

  7. Confirm that filtering and firewall rules will not interrupt the service.

NVIDIA provides specific guidance for corporate and school firewalls. School IT departments may need to allow traffic associated with GeForce NOW, including traffic originating from UDP port 5004 and ports 10000 through 20000. The district should review NVIDIA’s current firewall documentation rather than disabling security protections broadly.

Choosing a Membership

GeForce NOW currently offers Free, Performance, and Ultimate memberships, along with some short-term passes. Membership benefits, availability, and prices can change, so schools should check NVIDIA’s current membership page before creating a budget.

The Free membership can be useful for initial testing, but it is not a dependable option for scheduled league matches. Free users may encounter:

  • Advertisements before a session

  • Longer queues

  • Limited session lengths

  • Basic cloud gaming systems

  • Delays when attempting to reconnect

Premium memberships provide faster access, longer sessions, and stronger performance. As of July 2026, Performance and Ultimate memberships include 100 hours of premium playtime per month, with up to 15 unused hours rolling into the following month.

A school using GeForce NOW for official competition should not assume the Free membership will be available exactly when a match is scheduled.

How to Set Up Rocket League

After receiving approval from the district and IT department:

  1. Create an individual NVIDIA account for each player.

  2. Create or use an individual Epic Games account.

  3. Add the free Rocket League game to the Epic Games account.

  4. Open GeForce NOW on the Chromebook.

  5. Connect the student’s Epic Games account.

  6. Search for Rocket League and select the Epic Games version.

  7. Connect and test the controller.

  8. Adjust the streaming resolution to match the school’s network capacity.

  9. Play several casual matches before testing competitive play.

  10. Conduct a complete team scrimmage under normal school network conditions.

Schools should also verify how multifactor authentication, blocked email messages, password resets, and parent consent will be handled. Do not wait until the first match to discover that students cannot receive verification emails on their school accounts.

Can a School Run an Entire Team This Way?

Possibly, but success depends heavily on the district.

A school with strong internet access, cooperative IT staff, individual student accounts, wired connections, and paid memberships may be able to compete successfully using Chromebooks.

A school with congested Wi-Fi, aggressive filtering, limited bandwidth, shared accounts, or no technical support will probably struggle.

Cloud gaming also introduces dependencies that local gaming computers and consoles do not have. NVIDIA states that bandwidth, firewalls, unexpected demand, service availability, device limitations, and other technical conditions can affect or interrupt a session. Games may also be removed from the service in the future.

That makes GeForce NOW less predictable than running Rocket League locally.

Our Recommendation for Schools

GeForce NOW can be a valuable way to test student interest before investing in gaming computers. It may also provide a temporary path for a school that owns Chromebooks but does not yet have consoles or gaming PCs.

Garden State Esports recommends that schools:

  • Involve the IT department from the beginning.

  • Test every device simultaneously.

  • Use wired connections when possible.

  • Use individual student accounts.

  • Review NVIDIA and Epic Games account requirements.

  • Use a paid membership for scheduled competition.

  • Maintain a backup plan for important matches.

  • Avoid purchasing a full deployment until the school has completed several successful scrimmages.

For long-term competitive programs, gaming PCs and consoles remain more predictable because games run locally and do not depend on a cloud gaming queue or continuous video stream.

Still, Gary’s original discovery remains important. Students often find creative solutions before adults even know those solutions exist. With careful planning, cloud gaming can help some schools take their first step into scholastic esports.

It is not the perfect solution for every district, but it can lower the barrier for schools that might otherwise believe esports is completely out of reach.
