THE PURPOSE
Inclusion as the Starting Point, Not an Afterthought.
Unified at GSE brings students of all abilities together as teammates, competitors, and friends. Through athletics and shared experiences, students build confidence, develop leadership skills, and create meaningful connections that extend far beyond the playing field.
Our Unified League is built on the belief that everyone belongs and everyone has something valuable to contribute. Every practice, every game, and every season allows students to work together toward common goals while celebrating one another's strengths.
More than a sports program, Unified helps create a school community where inclusion is lived every day. Students compete together, support one another, and demonstrate that teamwork is strongest when everyone has the opportunity to participate.
WHAT STUDENTS GAIN
Competition Builds Connection
When students compete together, something more powerful than a win happens. They discover teammates, grow as communicators, and build the kind of trust that follows them for years.
Friendship
Unified students consistently report forming genuine friendships with their teammates. For students who may feel isolated or disconnected at school, those relationships provide connection, confidence, and a lasting sense of belonging.
Teamwork
Every Unified team is built on trust and mutual respect. As students compete together, they learn to rely on one another, communicate effectively, celebrate each other's strengths, and support one another through every challenge.
Confidence
Competing alongside peers who have your back builds the kind of confidence that extends well beyond the game. As students gain confidence in Unified, they become more willing to participate, take on new challenges, and step into leadership both in school and in life.
Communication
Through teamwork, in-game communication, post-match discussions, and everyday moments of encouraging one another, students strengthen communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills that extend beyond competition into the classroom, the workplace, and everyday life.
Belonging
Every student on a Unified team has a role, a voice, and the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution. The connections and sense of belonging fostered through Unified extend beyond the team, strengthening the broader school community and creating a culture where every student is valued.
Leadership
Unified provides students with meaningful opportunities to lead. Whether serving as captains, mentoring teammates, advocating for inclusion, or encouraging others, students develop confidence, strengthen their leadership skills, and make a lasting impact on their school community.
FOR SCHOOLS
Designed for Every School
Unified is built to work within the structures schools already have. No specialized equipment. No complex setup. Just a meaningful program that meets students where they are.
Who Can Participate?
Unified teams bring together general education students and students with disabilities to compete side-by-side as teammates. Most teams include an equal number of general education students and students with disabilities, creating opportunities for collaboration, friendship, and shared success.
Students from a wide range of educational programs, including Resource, ICR, LLD, autism, cognitive impairment, multiple disabilities, and physical disabilities, are welcome to participate.
Schools or programs that do not include general education students may also participate by forming a team composed entirely of Unified students.
How We Play
Unified competitions are designed to be asynchronous, allowing each school to compete on its own schedule. Many schools choose to play during lunch, recess, advisory, or adaptive physical education classes, but teams are welcome to participate whenever it works best for their students.
Each week, teams receive a new challenge, such as a Mario Kart race, a speedrunning objective, or a Just Dance routine. Schools have until Friday at 3:30 p.m. to submit their scores, which are added to the statewide leaderboard throughout the season. Every week brings a new opportunity to compete, improve, and celebrate your team's accomplishments.
Celebrate Every Student
Students who complete the Unified season are recognized with a certificate during the Garden State Esports State Championships, celebrating their commitment, teamwork, and accomplishments throughout the season. Top-performing students/teams may also earn an invitation to compete in-person during GSE’s State Championships.
Accessible Participation
Every student has an opportunity to participate in their own way. Whether competing alongside teammates, encouraging one another, assisting coaches, or celebrating successes, Unified creates meaningful experiences where students of all abilities participate, build relationships, and share in every achievement. Guidance is available to all Unified coaches regarding available accessibility hardware and/or copilot options.
