COMPETITIONS

Four leagues. One statewide program.

Garden State Esports gives students a season, a schedule, and teammates who expect them to show up. Schools choose the leagues that fit their students. Competition is the beginning. Belonging, leadership, and growth are what students carry forward.

WHY COMPETITION MATTERS

A familiar design built for schools

Garden State Esports was built to fit naturally into the school day. Teams compete against local rivals, matches begin at 3:30 PM, and seasons follow a familiar structure of regular season play, playoffs, and championships.

By mirroring traditional after-school athletics, esports becomes easier for schools to implement, easier for families to understand, and easier for students to commit to. More importantly, it brings with it many of the same benefits that make school sports so valuable: belonging, teamwork, accountability, school pride, leadership development, and stronger connections to school.

THE ECOSYSTEM

Every member school participates in the leagues that fit their students.

CHAMPIONSHIP LEAGUE

Varsity-level competition with a path to a state championship

The Championship League is GSE’s premier competitive division. Each school fields its top team to compete in a seven-week regular season, to qualify for the in-person State Championships, and to compete for a State Title. Designed for programs seeking the highest level of scholastic competition, the Championship League provides students with a structured, education-based esports experience that mirrors traditional interscholastic athletics. High school participants may earn varsity letters, while middle school teams follow the same championship pathway and compete for their own State Titles.

CONTENDERS LEAGUE

Developing Players Growing Programs.

The Contenders League is designed for developing programs, newer players, and schools looking for a more flexible competitive experience. Teams compete in a shorter season focused on skill development, teamwork, and student engagement while still enjoying meaningful competition against schools from across New Jersey. Whether you're building a new program, growing your roster, or providing additional opportunities for students beyond your Championship League team, Contenders offers an accessible pathway for players to gain experience, improve, and become part of the Garden State Esports community.

VALKYRIE LEAGUE

Championship-tier competition for girls, marginalized genders, and non-binary students

The Valkyrie League provides the same competitive experience as our Championship League, including state championships and varsity letter eligibility for qualifying high school students, within a community intentionally designed to support girls and other marginalized genders in esports. Valkyrie exists because talent grows where students feel they belong. For many students, joining their co-ed team can be intimidating; Valkyrie creates a space where they can compete, lead, and thrive without having to choose between competition and community. Valkyrie is intentionally scheduled to allow students to compete in both Valkyrie and Championship or Contenders leagues, helping build confidence, experience, and a natural bridge into co-ed competition.

UNIFIED LEAGUE

Competition without barriers. Belonging without limits.

The Unified League is designed for students with disabilities competing alongside their general education peers as equal teammates. Teams follow a 1:1 ratio, pairing one general education student with one student receiving special education services.

Because competition is asynchronous, schools can participate during the school day when it best fits student schedules and support needs. Teams compete on a statewide leaderboard, with top performers often earning invitations to compete in person at the GSE State Championships.

ON THE FLOOR

Finals are real. Recognition is earned.

Every Championship League season ends with an in-person state finals. Teams travel. Families watch. Students who have worked all season get a moment on stage in front of huge crowds. Winners receive championship belts and medals, and a year of bragging rights as State Champion.

RECOGNITION

State titles and varsity letters

High school students in Championship and Valkyrie can earn varsity letters when their school awards them. New Jersey law allows boards to recognize non-athletic interscholastic competition, and the New Jersey School Boards Association’s 2025 policy encourages districts to support esports programs and award letters. GSE publishes recommended criteria for schools. Non-competing contributors like casters, managers, and production staff may qualify for letters at the coach’s discretion.
